Marilyn Puett REVIEW COORDINATOR
Marilyn has spent a lifetime reading, though not always willingly. After college, she swore off the stuff (as do many). After two years of marriage, her husband’s job transferred them overseas and she found herself with lots of spare time, since hubby traveled eighty percent of the time. Discovering the library on a nearby Army base, she once again fell in love with the written word and discovered Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot books, along with Robert Ludlum, Sidney Sheldon, and Stephen King. Two years later, a new kind of book graced her bookshelves – pregnancy, motherhood, and parenting titles. And once again reading for fun was pushed aside while she dealt with carpools, little league, track practice, hubby’s business, and family in general. A six-year stint in the corporate world introduced her to the works of Og Mandino, Dale Carnagie, and Steven Covey, but in 1996, she retired to resume her favorite job – wife and mother.
Fast forward another eight years and, through a bizarre act of serendipity, Marilyn discovered romance novels. Being an internet junkie, she soon discovered websites devoted to not only the genre, but the authors and other readers. Twelve months ago, she started a “Books I Have Read” list; the list now has over one hundred fifty titles on it. Most are category romance, but the list also includes some mainstream single titles. And the “to be read” pile takes over an entire shelf in the bedroom.
Married for almost thirty years to her own tall, dark, and handsome hero, she has two sons in college and a loveable cat who has agreed to share the house. Since the nest is now empty (at least during the school year), she spends her days doing as little house and yard work as possible (if you spray a little furniture polish in the air and leave the broom propped in the corner, it gives the appearance of having done housework!). Instead, she curls up with a book from her pile, pen and pad in hand, taking notes on each book for emails to the authors. The most important lesson she has learned from her recent reading; however, is that writers and readers are the greatest group of people in the world.
